OpenPHI's services can be of service to institutions in the Health Information Technology ("HIT") field. These are some specific examples:
Integration with EMRs
HealthLibrarian's capabilities can be easily integrated with an Electronic Medical Record ("EMR"). This is the initial Use Case:
- An EMR user is conducting research on an adult male patient, 45 years old, who lives in Miami-Dade county, FL, has diabetes, and is taking Amaryl.
- The EMR will send a query to HealthLibrarian from within CPRS with these parameters: "Adult male 45 Miami-Dade FL diabetes Amaryl" (please notice that no Personally Identifiable Information2 is ever sent to HealthLibrarian).
- You can try the query "Adult male 45 Miami-Dade FL diabetes" yourself if you Visit HealthLibrarian's site. For details on the drug "Amaryl" please select the "Drug/Medication" query button and type "Amaryl" in the query box.
- HealthLibrarian will conduct a semantic search on its databases to obtain information relevant to the patient's sex, age, location, disease(s) and drug(s) of interest.
- The EMR will then receive an XML file with all the relevant information, including: clinical guidelines for the treatment of the target disease; adverse events related to the chosen drug; relevant patient education materials; full product label for the chosen drug, both in English and Spanish; and more.
- HealthLibrarian will also flag if the patient qualifies for clinical trials in his local area.
- The EMR will then display the HealthLibrarian information in a manner that is both useful and easy to act upon by the provider.
- The EMR may give the user the option to save the information provided by HealthLibrarian as part of the patient's record.
Please download the white paper Integration of HealthLibrarian with VistA EMR to view a draft proposal of how to integrate HealthLibrarian with the Veterans Administration's VistA EMR.
Note: VistA is used at the Veterans Administration, one of the largest medical system in the US. Serving several million veterans, with 180K medical staff, 163 hospitals, 800 clinics, and 135 nursing homes.
Personalized Health Portals
This proposal showcases the value of integrating HealthLibrarian's databases with a personal "portal." Patients or physicians themselves could create individualized "profiles" and then HealthLibrarian will provide them with relevant, filtered, and actionable information from scientific and validated sources.
